Simple things can make your day even more special!

We’ve  held so many weddings here at Pentre Mawr and learned from  our fabulous couples how to make their day even more special.  One of our lovely gang recently brought a lawn game we’d never seen before called Cornhole.  Well, needless to say we had to have one.   A lovely chap called Uncle Keith made this fabulous game for us to share with our couples.   Message me if you’d like his details so you have one for yourselves at home.

Our chess set gets well used too and the tug of war rope gives our girls and boys something to fight over so they can kiss and make up afterwards.

Another couple had a  school sports days where everyone joined in the fun so guess what…….. we bought a set of cones and a megaphone.

Simple things can really make your day without costing the earth!!!

What makes a great Party?

Over the last four years while we’ve being holding weddings at Pentre Mawr, we’ve seen loads of different disco’s and  bands. Weddings are a huge mix of young and old and our advice is always to make sure you’re having the music to suit all ages if you want a full dance floor.   On the bank holiday weekend we saw this work amazingly.  The parents of our wonderful wedding couple hired a Tom Jones impersonator.   The   couple wanted a Welsh Wedding with bells on! and that’s exactly what they got. We can’t recommend him enough!   His name was Ian Anthony and you can contact him on his website  A really lovely chap and a full dance floor.   What more could you want!!

Why Have A Winter Wedding?

We know you must think we’re mad for thinking about the winter now the sun has finally come out. But, we have lots of brides getting ready for their winter weddings and so we thought we’d share with you what makes a winter wedding so special.

Roll out the white carpet…

If you’re lucky enough to get a dusting of snow, you with have the most perfect pictures imaginable. Can you imagine anything looking nicer than a white blanket to cover the place? In fact, winter is one of the only times of year to get married where you do have a weather guarantee. Ok, so not a 100% guarantee but there is one thing you can be sure of, it’s going to be cold. This is great! It means everybody knows exactly what to wear to make sure they are kept warm, trust me when I say the ladies will thank you for this.

A Seasonal Highlight…

Having you’re wedding in winter, means it’s unlikely your guests will have been to a good wedding in a while and will be ready for a great day! Most people find it much easier to take time off work in winter, meaning everyone you want to, should be able to attend.

Winter weddings are so different, they brighten up dark days and really will leave your guests with a day to remember.

A Romantic Wedding With A Difference…

There is nothing more romantic than snuggling up to the one you love, and where better than you’re wedding day. You and your guests can all keep warm in our barns and as the evening draws in, everyone can get snug around the fire and toast marshmallows to their hearts content.  After all, what’s more romantic than a pint of beer and burnt lips?

Keeping it cosy….

Winter weddings make for the cosiest. Picture this, everyone arriving to your wedding in our beautiful red brick barn, watching you get married and then enjoying a warm mulled wine with the newly weds.

As your day draws in you can enjoy the rest of your wedding by candlelight. There is no other time of year you can truly have a candlelit wedding. For lots of couples this is their dream.

Save The Heat For The Honeymoon…

Escaping winter after your wedding and catching some sun is lovely. In winter you’re avoiding hurricane season (in most places) so it widens your choices of where to go. There will be no children’s summer holidays to negotiate and everyone loves a winter tan!

Having the wedding of your dreams, in cosy barns (heated of course), with a candlelit dinner, an evening barn dance and toasty fire pits is exactly what you can have, here at Pentre Mawr.

The BBC Says…

This morning on the BBC news they were discussing the cost of weddings.   I was astounded to hear that the average price of a wedding these days is £30k. The main point wasn’t just the wedding venue and hospitality or even the wedding dress!!!! It was the cost of all the extras. It’s been something we’ve been very aware of since we started doing weddings. All our couples want to have an individual wedding day totally different to their friends. Trends are changing all the time and it’s difficult to keep up with the next big things, but we’re having a good go here. The general discussion was that the effort to make your day individual is what causes so much stress. The last thing the preparation for your wedding day should be is stressful.

Planning Your Wedding Should Be Fun!

So the recommendation on the TV this morning was to have a wedding planner and venue dresser to take away some of that stress. Forgive me for saying this but I’m not sure that’s the way to go. I loved choosing all the bits for our wedding day, it was half the fun and excitement running up to the day. Now that we’re a Wedding Venue I’m having all that fun again, choosing things for our Pinterest room that I hope our couples will love!!

There’s always so much excitement here.

When our couples arrive with their gang in hand to decorate the marquees and barns. We love the laughter and giggles as they root around in my wedding store for the stuff they need, (Need? that’s maybe not the right word!!!) but the bits they want to make their day as individual as possible. So the plan here is to take the stress away, add to the fun and cut the dreaded costs down, maybe just a little bit.

So picture this at your wedding venue,

Two days before your wedding, Lorna, our wedding planner? wedding coordinator? right hand man? or if we’re being PC, right hand person? is on hand with the Bucks Fizz and the camera. Our couples arrive with their entourage. Lorna takes lots of photos while our grooms and their ushers are up ladders putting up the bunting or lanterns. Candy carts and photos walls are moved into position. As the day goes on if anything’s missed, they can usually find a suitable replacement in the Pinterest room. But the main thing is that at the end of that day, everything’s done at no extra cost or stress.

Stress, what stress?

Over the last four years since we’ve been holding weddings here I have three pieces of advice that I would give to every couple.  Firstly, visit as many venues as possible, you’ll get lots of ideas at all of them.  Always ask if there are any extras, vat and or service charges etc. Lastly, have a spread sheet, list everything you like on it.  You’d be surprised how the hidden extras add up.

Don’t Panic…

You can have the day of your dreams. Give Lorna a ring on 01824790732 or Bre on 07799887234, come have a wander around Pentre Mawr. Have a root around in our Pinterest room and if nothing else you’ll have a coffee and cake and maybe gets some ideas for your perfect wedding day.

Wedding Fayres & Why We Don’t Do Them

Why don’t we do the wedding fayres?

While we love doing weddings, the simple answer is, they’re just not  for us.   We became a wedding venue by accident when we held a friends wedding.  Once the enquiries started to come in we thought we’d better see what was expected of us as wedding venue and held two wedding fayres. We went to a few ourselves to see what we were meant to do.  We just didn’t feel welcomed. It wasn’t that the venue’s staff were unfriendly, it was just that there was so many people there that they couldn’t get around everyone and that’s exactly what happened at our fayres. I felt like it was a heavy sell with different vendors trying to vie for your business.  I just hate the heavy sell.

So what do we do?

We send you a brochure, so you know a bit about us before you come.  We than ask you to visit.   The worse that will happen is that you’ll have a nice cup of coffee and cake and maybe pick up some ideas even if you don’t have your wedding here. The main thing I love about our weddings here, is that our couples can do whatever they want so long as it’s legal and it can physically be done of course.  I truly believe that you need to visit lots of venues so you find exactly what you want for the most important day of your lives.

We’ve learnt a lot in the last four years since we started holding weddings. I hate the hidden extras. I hate the list of rules; two things we seriously try to avoid here.

Lorna, our new wedding coordinator told me as she was leaving the other day that she just loves her job.   Music to my ears!!  I asked her why and her answer was simple, we meet lovely couples, who are planning their fabulous wedding day at the happiest time of their lives.   What’s not to love!!!

Pentre Mawr is one of the hardest places to quantify.

Without any arrogance on our behalf, there’s just a lot to it.  So, and I know our bridal couples hate it, we don’t give out prices. You have to come and visit. So many people tell us our website doesn’t do it justice but we kind of like it that way.   We love the look of surprise when our couples see the secret garden and walk into the dance barn with it’s mezzanine.   I’m at my happiest spending time buying things for our Pinterest room so that our couples can have it all. From the candy cart to the photo wall we try to have everything that our couples might need absolutely free of charge.

If your planning a wedding you’ll know by now that there’s no such thing as a cheap wedding but, and it’s a big BUT, you can truly have it all here at Pentre Mawr.

Meet Lorna, our new Wedding Coordinator

Hello to our lovely bridal couples,

My name is Lorna and I am the new wedding coordinator here at Pentre Mawr. I am absolutely loving my new job so far and can’t wait to meet you all! Whether you are already one of our beautiful brides to be or planning a visit to check us out, I thought I would share with you all some advice.

I know there is so much to plan and organise when it comes to a wedding
I remember from planning my own! So I’ve put together a small list of worries you may have and the best advice I could give to calm those nerves.

Let’s start with the weather
It is the one thing you cannot do anything about. So, I say stop worrying. As lovely as the sunshine may be, some of the best photos are taken in the rain or snow. Plus, here at Pentre Mawr, a little rain never hurt anyone. In fact, we have a wide selection of umbrellas in our wedding store and we always have a plan A, B and C for the weather. After all this is Wales.
Moving on to children
That’s right I’m going to talk about those beautiful little beings that nobody wants screaming at a wedding. Well rest assured there is so much space here that they can run around safely and burn off any excess energy. So if you are worrying about children, stop. I have to say from experience, quite often they make a wedding, with the fun, quirky things that they do. And it is one of Bre’s favourite sayings ‘If you haven’t had one, you’ve been one.’ So if you are a bride or a mum worrying about the little darlings, just relax as we all love them!
I remember at my wedding, which was here at Pentre Mawr, worrying about the best men and all the drinks they planned on having before the wedding and throughout the day. I had many stern words in the lead up to the day, but on the day they were fine.  And now I’m the other side I can see why. Bre & Graham make sure everyone up here is full of food before the time to say ‘I Do’ comes. And as much as we will make sure you have plenty of fizz, it will be just the right amount.

Now for the joys of family dynamics and table plans. It’s so difficult to make everyone happy, and sometimes I think as the bride and groom it’s easy to forget there are only two people that this whole day is about and that’s YOU! So stop trying to organise everyone else’s issues and focus on your big day. I mean, there’s enough space up here not to worry. If you really are worried though as much as we keep out of family politics, it is our job to make sure you have the best day imaginable and so have a word with us, we will keep an eye on things.

Risk management

Every wedding day has a mini crisis, that’s just life. At mine, it was my cake falling over. (And I have to say between Bre and my caterer the crisis was managed fantastically. But I know Bre would never admit how well she hid it from me until it was sorted). So I can definitely vouch for the fact that no crisis will fall on you. I know that Bre has sewn a bride into her wedding dress before. So nothing is out of the question, and everything can and will be sorted. All I will say is don’t worry about it, your day will be perfect and any little things will become the fun stories you tell at a later date.

Finally, dancing and the first dance. For so many people the first dance can be a little daunting, others love it and seriously throw some shapes. No matter what you are planning for your first dance, my advice would be to have the bridesmaids and best men ready in the wings. So if you are cringing inside and are ready for some company on the dance floor, that’s their queue to join you. Plus, having the dance floor full by the end of your first dance means that everyone is already on there to keep partying the night through.

Don’t worry. Be happy

My final piece of advice is stop worrying and start enjoying! The big day will come around so quickly! The hardest part should be trying to put all of your creative ideas into the big day. But again, don’t worry too much as there is so much scope up here there is room for lots of creativity.

Lorna xx
